What is the difference in Type I and Type II diabetes?
Type I diabetes is characterized by a childhood onset of the disease. In most cases people with Type I diabetes will be dependent upon the use of insulin injections to control their blood sugar levels from the very beginning. Type II diabetes, on the other hand, generally has an adult onset around the age of 40 to 50 years. These individuals do not require insulin at the onset of their disease but rather some form of oral medication in combination with diet and exercise. This can be very effective in Type II diabetes control. The difference in the two types of diabetes is in the control of insulin. In Type I diabetes, the pancreas just does not produce enough insulin to take care of all the sugars in the blood. In Type II diabetes there is enough insulin, but the body cannot use it effectively.
