What is the difference in the duties of a producer and an executive producer?
“Producer” (whether executive or not) is applied to a person involved in getting the production produced, whether it be to get funding or equipment or cast and crew or whatnot. They can be as involved as they wish to be or are allowed to be, and can delegate most tasks to other people. Executive producer tends to imply that there is more than one producer, and that they are either 1) in charge of the whole of production matters in their area of it with other producers below them, or 2) in charge of the whole of production matters for the entire production with other producers below them, or 3) it is simply a title given to them to make them feel important and has no other value. Many a time number 3 applies, where the person is simply given the title as a credit but actually holds no authority nor does anything of merit to further production.
