What Is the Difference in Speaker Wire Gauges?
Speaker wire is measured by the American Wire Gauge (AWG) system, used since 1857 for the standardized measurement of wire for electrical conduction. Either solid or stranded core wires are designated an AWG size, based on the raw wire diameter, less insulation. Generally, the thicker the wire size, the more voltage it can handle, but the size needs to increase exponentially as length increases. This information is important in audio speaker applications, and will help decide which gauge wire is right for your installation.
