What is the difference between ZVV tickets and tickets for the Swiss national public-transport network?

When travelling by ZVV, you pay for a combination of “area and time”; on the Swiss national transport network, you pay for a particular route. A ZVV ticket is valid for all the public-transport carriers within the zones printed on it. A ticket issued for a particular route within the national transport network is only valid for that particular route and for one mode of transport. For all journeys within the territory covered by the ZVV fare system (Canton Zurich and 14 adjacent communes), the only tickets available are based on zones. Within the zones you have paid for, the tickets are valid for all public-transport services. Example: if you have paid for zone 10 (Zurich municipal territory), your ticket is valid on S-Bahn trains, trams, municipal buses, Limmat boat services, the Polybahn, the Dolderbahn and all regional buses within the municipal boundaries.
