What is the difference between water based lubricant and silicone based lubricant? Is silicone safe with latex condoms?

0

The choice between a water based lube or a silicon based lubricant is a personal choice. Both types of lubricants can be used with latex and polyurethane condoms. When using toys a water based lubricant should be used. If the toy is made of silicone, the silicone based lubricant will break down the material. Water based lubricants will dry quicker than a silicone based lubricant and usually more lube is required if you are using a water based lubricant. If you and your partner are being intimate in a water setting such as a shower or bathtub, a silicone based lubricant will last longer and provide more glide than water based lubricant. Both rinse off easily with soap and water.

Water-based lubricants are safe to use with all types of condoms and sex toys. They are easy to wash off, but because they are water-based they do not last long in wet environments such as the shower or bath.  They are also available in a number of flavours, which is great for oral play. Companies like ID Lubricants make a very good range of flavoured lubricants that are sugar free and taste pretty good. (Lubes that are sugar free are preferred as they reduce the risk of getting a yeast infection)

Silicone-based lubricants are more expensive than their water-based counterparts, however you will usually find that a little lube goes a long way.  Silicone lube lasts longer than water-based, and can be used quite successfully underwater. It is still easy to wash off with a little soap and water – it just requires a little more effort than the water based lubes.

Silicone lubes are safe to use with latex condoms, however they should not be used with toys that are made from silicone. Toys made from plastics such as ABS should be fine.

Silicone-based lubricants are often used for anal play as they offer a higher degree of lubrication.

To summarise, water-based lubes are great all-rounders. They are safe to use with all toys and condoms, safe for oral use and wash off easily. If you find you need that little extra bit of lubrication, silicone lubes are a great alternative – just don’t use with silicone toys.
