The term carrying capacity was originally used in the physical sciences and described the amount of use an area could sustain without degradation to the area. Visitor capacity is a term that has been used by social scientists to describe the amount of visitor use an area can sustain without degrading the visitor experience. For the most part, these terms are interchangeable.
