What is the difference between videoconferencing and webcasting?
Videoconferencing: This technology utilizes PictureTel or other brands of videoconferencing equipment to provide two-way communication of both audio and video signals over ISDN (Integrated System Digital Network) phone lines. The program is viewed on standard television monitors at PictureTel rooms located at fixed locations. The audio and video signals are most commonly sent to a single PictureTel room but may also be sent to multiple sites. Videoconferencing always has the capability to be two-way. Webcasting: Webcasting utilizes a computer located at the send end with the proper encoding hardware and software to allow the video signals to be digitized and sent over the Internet. The signal is then viewed on individual computers by addressing a web site and logging in with the proper password. Webcasting is basically one way, however phone lines and chat rooms can be set up to allow communication between the viewers and back to the send location.
