What is the difference between varsity, intramurals, and club sports?
Varsity teams are intercollegiate in nature and must follow NCAA and ACC rules and regulations. Practices and games are mandatory, determined by coaches and travel is required to play other university intercollegiate teams. Some varsity sports at UVa allow “walk-on” tryouts while others solely recruit. Varsity sports usually require a full year’s commitment. Club Sports are essentially “extramural” in nature, embody the student selfgovernance model and compete against other college and university clubs but club sports are not part of NCAA or ACC. Clubs request funding from Student Council and practices / games are determined by club officers. Club sports may not require a full year commitment but vary from club to club. Intramural Sports are competitive and recreational sports played on Grounds at UVA against other UVA students or faculty. Seasons usually last 3-6 weeks and are coordinated by professional staff members with programs being implemented and supervised by student superviso
