The difference lies in the fact that geothermal energy supplies energy while spray foam insulation is a way to contain energy. If both are used the result will be an extremely well heated or cooled and insulated structure that would use almost no energy. The spray foam would capture the natural heat and would not let it escape through cracks, or crevices, or flow through walls.
