What is the difference between using a magnifier and using my spectacles?

Basically magnifiers and spectacle lenses both work in the same way: they both bend light. However, magnifiers are used to bend light to make things appear bigger, whilst spectacle lenses have been prescribed by your Optician to ensure that the light that enters your eye is focused on the back of the eye to form a sharp image. If you used a magnifier without wearing your correct prescription spectacles you will end up with either a larger, but fuzzy image, or not get the full benefit of the magnifiers strength.
