Jordan and Georgia, Class 3, St Ippolyts School There are many different types of ice. Ice gets thicker the older it is, starting at about 5cm thick when the surface of the sea freezes, and can get to 50 metres in height, which is how high the ice shelves of Antarctica are. Endurance can break through ice up to 1 metre thick, travelling at 5 miles per hour.
