What Is the Difference between the Subconscious and the Conscious?
The conscious mind is critical, analytical, reasoning, and intellectual. It makes decisions, directs our movement and activities but cannot implement our intentions unless the subconscious is in agreement. The subconscious controls breathing, blood circulation and involuntary functions. It is always awake, records and stores memories, is very literal, accepts everything as presented and is home to habitual behavior. During hypnosis the conscious mind gets put aside temporarily and the subconscious mind becomes dominant, energized and alert. Old memories can be accessed, belief systems can be updated and unwanted behaviors transformed into more positive and constructive ones. An example of what happens when the conscious and subconscious do not agree is: You may consciously want to quit smoking and may have tried not to smoke. If you still smoke, it is probable that you subconscious maintains a belief, from when you began smoking, that smoking is essential and not smoking is damaging. Y
