What is the difference between the E34 and E60 BMW M5s?
E34 was produced from 1988 through 1996 (1989 to 1995 in North America) while the E60 is the current 5 Series which started production in 2003 (E60 M5 started in 2005). The E34 was the last of the true M, or ‘Motorsport’ cars. That is a base chassis/shell was sent to the M factory and all of the M work was handcrafted including the engine. After that, 1996, all M cars were built on the assembly line side-by-side with their standard brethern. The E34 M5 had 318 to 340 HP from the inline 6 while the E60 has 507 from a V10.
