What is the difference between the devised piece and the extract and how much flexibility is allowed?
The extract is taken from the piece as it stands. It will need to ‘fit’ the candidates you have, though, and it is acceptable to adapt it to make it fit. This includes missing out minor characters, having females playing roles and vice-versa, multi-role playing. In a music piece, the vocal line could be played by a solo instrumentalist. The devised piece is created from scratch by candidates. It should show that they understand the style of the person who wrote the original piece and that they can imitate this style. It is a form of pastiche where candidates demonstrate their ability to show the ‘fingerprints’ of the original choreographer, composer or playwright in a new piece.
