What is the difference between the data warehouse and transactional systems like IDMS and PeopleSoft?

TOP Unlike the real-time transactional data generated in the day-to-day operations of the university, the NAU Data Warehouse uses data that doesn’t change from moment to moment. The ODS (Operational Data Store) data is refreshed nightly from the IDMS/PeopleSoft transactional system. The Data Mart data may represent a period of time — for example, the end of the midterm or the end of the semester. This allows users to develop an historical perspective by comparing different periods of time to determine trends and patterns. NAU Data Warehouse users won’t be able to determine whether a particular engineering student paid his or her bill at the beginning of the semester, but they will be able to determine if that student’s engineering class changed size from one semester to the next.
