There are Gap Year programs here in the US, but many are pay programs for US citizens, or kids do interesting internships that will help them along in their future professions. They aren’t just a year off, but actually another form of education. (One of my son’s friends is studying film in Paris next year for his Gap Year, living with a family in the film industry, another is teaching English in Costa Rica for a year.) Typically kids here take a Gap Year in Europe, or some other country, but more and more there are Gap Year opportunities in the US, but many are pay programs, costing $10,000 to $20,000. You would not be able to work in the US without a work visa (which would be almost impossible to get), but you could get the proper visa in certain programs that hire international students to work, for Gap Year or otherwise.
