What is the difference between the Adobe text file with the title of “Index to Catlin Texts” and the Acrobat software-generated index?
The software-generated index is a keyword-searching feature. The index cannot be printed out. This feature allows you to locate all occurrences of a word or words. “Index to Catlin Texts” is a comprehensive index, which was compiled manually. Neither every term nor every instance of a term was included. Non-substantive instances of terms were excluded. There are instances where a subject is dealt with on more than the page(s) on which the term itself appears. For example, buffalo hunting may be the subject of five consecutive pages, but the term itself may appear on only two of the pages. The UCDP comprehensive index references all five pages. There are also instances where an index term refers to a page(s) in the text where the term does not appear at all, but is, in fact, the subject under discussion. This is the case for concepts.
