What is the difference between the 2G and 3G iPhone?
2G and 3G are abbreviations for 2nd generation and 3rd generation (referring to the cellular network each phone uses). The 2nd generation cellular network for AT&T is known as EDGE. The first generation iPhone (the 2G) can only use this 2G network. The 3rd generation cellular network is simply known as 3G. The second generation iphone (the 3G) can use both the EDGE and 3G networks. Among other advances, thhe 3G network is most notably preferred for being faster the 2G network. In addition the the network differences, the 3G iPhone also has GPS capabilites (and a few other minor hardware features).
