What is the difference between Target/Range ammunition and Defense ammunition?
Target/range ammunition is usually cheaper ammunition designed so that you can build your shooting skills without breaking the bank. This is almost always full metal jacket or similar. For example, in 9mm luger, factory made target ammunition can be had for about 20 cents per round. “Defense” ammunition is a cartridge of the same caliber, but usually with a specialized bullet designed to expand and/or break apart upon impact. These are almost always hollow point bullets. The two-fold purpose of the expansion is to have the bullet NOT go through the attacker, risking harm to others, and to cause the maximum damage to the shot person. A target round will have little or no expansion upon hitting a person, and will tend to just pass straight through, causing the least amount of damage. A defense round will (usually) expand upon entering the target, which slows it down faster and creates a larger wound, the goal being to cause a drop in blood pressure as quickly as possible so as to incapac
