What is the difference between Tachyphaxis and Tolerance?
Tachyphlaxis means rapidly diminishing response. It is common with the amphetamine type compounds. These compounds cause displacement of transmitter (NE) from the storage vesicles. There appears to be only a certain of amount transmitter available for this type of release. When these stores are depleted the response to these agents is also reduced. This diminished response can occur within hours/days, dose to dose. Whereas tolerance is a long term reduction (adaptation) in response ie. weeks/months.
