In their current state, web application platforms come in three flavors: • Do-it-yourself Site Builders – these tools run in your browser, on your home computer or workstation and allow your to build a web site. Qualities: low price, limited functinality, high cost to expand functionality if even possible, limited or complex integration options. (Microsoft Frontpage and Register.Com are examples of this type). • Small-Scale Custom Platforms – used by (and typically built by) small web design shops to streamline their own internal development cycle and improve their margins on a project by project basis. Qualities: customizable, understood only by the solution developer, non-transferable.
