What is the difference between synthetic oil and petroleum-based oil?

This is a hard one to pin down. Look at my News Letters. In there you will find correspondence with API, Associated Petroleum Institute. Synthetic, according to API is not a classification of properties in the oil; it is a “Performance Classification”. If oil is petroleum based, it shouldn’t be classified as synthetic. According to Mobile One, their oil is a product of synthetic manufacturing. It is not petroleum based oil with additives or enhanced refining. At EuroWerks, we have chosen Mobile One for those reasons. It is oil manufactured from synthetic properties. But, we continue to suggest oil service intervals at more reasonable intervals.
