It’s a matter of how the unit attaches to the wall. Surface mounted units are affixed to a wall or other flat surface with mounting hardware through the back panel of the mailbox unit. Recessed mounted units fit into an opening within a wall and are secured with mounting hardware through the back or side panels of the mailbox unit. Recessed mounted units include a fully integrated collar which fits over the rough opening for a finished, professional look.
