What is the difference between “standby” and “hibernate”?
A standby or sleep state is a power state that a computer can enter where specific components of the computer are turned off to save power This can result in a large reduction in the amount of power required by the system, and depending on what portions of the system are powered down the computer can resume operation in a few moments. A hibernation state is a state where the current state of the workstation is saved to the hard disk drive and the computer is powered off. This method of saving power does allow the computer to resume to the same state it was before the computer was powered off but will take a longer time to resume normal operation than a sleep state.
