Speed is a scalar quantity ie: when we talk about speed we are talking only about rate at which it is moving ahead with respect of time.We are not talking about the direction in which it is moving. But in velocity we talk about both the direction and speed. Displacement is like distance but there is a slight difference. I will explain with the help of an example. Suppose u have to go to a shop so u go on the road takes first left then moves 20 meters and then take right and moves 30 meters and reach the shop. Here 20+30meters is the distance but if we draw a straight line between your house and the shop that will be the displacement.
