What is the difference between song lyrics and poetry?
There are a few differences, notably: 1) Meter: Not all poems stick with a meter. In order to get a point across, or to sound different, sometimes a line or two will not adhere to the same meter the rest of the poem is written in. Song lyrics, on the other hand, tend to stick with a consistent meter in order to match the music beat and rhythm. 2) Rhyme: Not all poems rhyme, and many have a variable rhyme scheme. For example, a poem might have 5 verses of 4 lines each. Each stanza, or grouping of lines may have its own rhyme scheme, and they might not all match, such as ABAB ACAC, BCBC, ACBC, AACC, where each letter represents a rhyme sound. Song lyrics tend to (but not always) have the same rhyme scheme throughout the entire lyric, again so that it will be more pleasing when combined with the music. 3) Semantics: Even though both poetry and song lyrics are groupings of lines of text, some people (I don’t know if there is really an “official” definition) consider song lyrics to be writt
