What is the difference between Sodium Bicarbonate, Baking Soda and Baking powder?

Baking soda and sodium bicarbonate are the same thing. Baking Powder is baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) mixed with a dry acid (cream of tartar) and other salts. I would imagine the recipe would call for baking soda… you may have used a little too much for the recipe or it has to do with baking times and temps.
