What is the difference between sod and grass?
Sod is grass but not all grass is sod. Sod is special breeds of grass grown with very shallow roots so that the top layer of soil can be removed along with the grass stems so that it lives when re-planted somewhere else. I saw miles and miles of sod farms in Rhode Island this summer and they were breathtakingly beautiful.
Sod is topsoil bound together by grass roots. So in a way, sod is inseparable from grass. Without the grass, it would be soil; with the grass it becomes sod, or turf. One of the four basic Rghts of Commons by Old English Common Law is “turvary,” the right to cut sods from common land and take them home. The other three are Pasturage, Pescary, and Estover.
