What is the difference between single malt, double malt etc. wiskies?
A single malt whiskey uses only one strain of malt in fermentation and therefore the malt must have the correct flavour or the whiskey is not good. It is more difficult to make a single malt whiskey because so much is riding on that one malt. A double malt whiskey uses two malts and they are blended, therefore the whiskey maker can depend on the blending of the malts to make it a little easier to come up with a good taste. Blended malt whiskies, in which many malts are used, are even easier to manipulate in order to come up with a good flavour. Single malts are more expensive because it is often more difficult to get it right…add more malts and it is easier to make a good taste but the proce drops.
