What is the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity?
Sexual orientation is the direction of one’s interest toward members of the same, opposite, or both genders whereas gender identity is a person’s innate sense of gender. The two terms are very separate in meaning. A transgender person is not necessarily attracted to a person of the opposite gender or same gender. Sexual orientation and gender identity work independently of each other and neither identity implies anything about the other. For example: Susan is a transgender individual who has transitioned from male to female. It should not be assumed that Susan is attracted to men. Susan may identify as a lesbian or as a straight female. Her identity as a female does not determine her sexual orientation.
