What is the difference between semi-metallic and ceramic brake pads? Which would you recommend for my car / truck / SUV?
In recent years, car manufacturers have increased the number of ceramic-based disc pads it uses on its cars. Today, approximately 33% of new cars use ceramic pads while semi-metallic still represents the largest category. Ceramic-based pads offer drivers the capability of handling today’s high brake temperatures with less heat fade, faster recovery times, and less wear on both the pads and rotors. They also significantly reduce brake noise and squeal. Another benefit associated with ceramic brakes is the absence of visible brake dust. Despite the added benefits of ceramic, most cars today still come with semi-metallic pads and most drivers continue to replace their pads with semi-metallic formulations. Other than for specific high performance vehicle types, or for high performance driving styles, semi-metallic pads like ours offer many of the same benefits as ceramic under most driving conditions.
