What is the difference between self-study and independent study?

Interpreters who are not obligated to comply with continuing education requirements, purchase these courses for their own professional development. That is considered Independent Study because they do not have to complete the corresponding assignment. On the other hand, interpreters who do have to comply with what is referred to as “participatory” continuing education requirements must select courses that have been specifically approved by the CIAP (Court Interpreter Advisory Panel). In addition, they also have to complete x number of self-study hours. The content of the self-study must fall under the category of skills and knowledge as defined by the Judicial Council.
