What is the difference between Self-Hypnosis and Suggestion?
As mentioned above, self-hypnosis is the act of hypnotising oneself, where one may or may not be aware of the trance state. Just as people naturally go into a trance state they also automatically make suggestions to themselves and are also open to external suggestions, which may then become internalised or lodged in the subconscious. All suggestions, regardless of origin, are stopped by the conscious thinking mind, and may be either passed on to the subconscious mind, or rejected. So the mind has the ability to control the material which reaches the subconscious mind. Self-hypnosis can create conditions whereby the subconscious is more receptive to suggestion. Suggestion takes place all the time, we are bombarded by advertising and all forms of multi-media. Yet, if our conscious mind in not aware of these influences it cannot act as a censor or outer-guard. As such, suggestions enter out subconscious and exert an influence.
