What is the difference between “self-declaration”, “certification”, and “registration”; and how do they apply to the Army’s implementation?
In common usage and even in publications, the terms certification and registration are used interchangeably. Some may make the distinction that you “register” a management system and “certify” to a product standard, but this distinction is rarely noted in the world of ISO 14001. If a company’s EMS is certified or registered to ISO 14001 it meets all requirements of the standard. The Certification Body is the third party that actually conducts the assessment of the organization’s EMS. In the U.S., this certification body is often referred to as a “registrar” or certification company. ISO 14001 is also relevant to organizations that make a self-determination and self-declaration of conformance to the standard. An organization can implement an EMS, internally evaluate its conformance with the standard, and then declare conformance.
