What is the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC piping?

0

The difference is in the specification of the wall thickness of the piping, S40 has a thinner wall than S80 piping for the same size. The specification is such that the outside diameter of S40 and S80 piping will have the same value. Therefore, they will differ by inside diameter. For example: a 1″ (25.4 mm) S40 pipe will have an outside diameter of 1.315″ (33.4 mm) and an inside diameter of 1.029″ (26.1 mm), where as a 1″ (25.4 mm) S80 pipe will have an outside diameter of 1.315″ (33.4 mm) and an inside diameter of 0.936″ (23.8 mm). The thicker piping allows it to handle a larger pressure. However, in the vast majority of the situations encountered in the reef aquarium hobby, the thinner piping and fittings will be more than sufficient. And it tends to be cheaper as well.
