What is the difference between SAS and SATA?
A3. While there are very few feature differences between the two serial interfaces, infrastructure scalability is the primary difference. Very high capacity storage arrays can be built with SAS. As with SCSI, there is a significant price premium paid for SAS drives compared to SATA drives. In fact, given that SAS is an emerging technology, there is even a significant price premium for SAS drives compared to SCSI drives. SATA benefits from economies of scale driven by desktop volumes, which drives a significantly lower cost per gigabyte advantage.
