renato: “Tar” is a common term for asphaltic cement, the technical term for the binding material in asphaltic concrete pavements or surfacing. There are three common categories of asphaltic cement: viscosity graded, cutback and emulsified. Viscosity graded asphaltic cement can be mixed with aggregated and additives such as hydrated lime to produce asphaltic concrete – the common “blacktop” road material. Cutback asphaltic cement contains kerosene to allow it to be sprayed or dispensing as a tack or prime coat fo asphaltic concrete, or sprayed on gravel as a chip seal. Emulsified asphalt contains soap-like compounds that enable dispersion like cutback, with reduced evaporation of hydrocarbons that can pollute the air.
