What is the difference between restricted and unrestricted gifts?
The NFA Foundation prefers unrestricted gifts that provide support to the areas of greatest need. Gifts intended to be restricted in nature should be referred to the Development Office. With the exception of those projects being funded through tax-free bonds, unrestricted gifts provide resources for innovative programs, building restoration, information technology and equipment. Restricted gifts are earmarked for specific purposes only.
Restricted gifts are set aside for specific purposes chosen by you, such as endowed scholarships or facility support. See the above sections for more information on the numerous opportunities you have to designate your gift. Conversely, unrestricted gifts provide a funding source for ISU to send where it is most needed on our campus. This support provides funds for equipment, recruitment, faculty support, and other opportunities that enhance the academic experience for all of our students and the ISU community as a whole. Although both restricted and unrestricted gifts are welcome, unrestricted gifts are of critical importance because they allow the University to provide funding in the areas of greatest need to meet unexpected challenges, take advantage of unique opportunities, and meet the many day-to-day expectations of higher education.

These gifts are used where needed most throughout the institution, including resources to recruit top faculty, create scholarship programs and internship opportunities and enhance the overall academic life of the campus. On the other hand, restricted gifts are earmarked for specific purposes chosen by the donor, such as an endowed scholarship or professorship, program or building. Although both unrestricted and restricted gifts are welcome, unrestricted gifts are of critical importance because they allow the university to provide funding in the areas of greatest need to meet unexpected challenges, take advantage of unique opportunities and meet the many day-to-day challenges of current higher education.
An unrestricted gift is given to the law school without any restrictions on its use—they enable John Marshall to place the contributions where the most critical need exists. Restricted gifts, on the other hand, are earmarked by the donor for a specific program or purpose. Donations of any amount may be restricted to a specific program.
