In terms of patient status codes, there is no difference. Discharges to residential care and private (non-state designated/supported) assisted living facilities are coded alike (01).

These two types of care are basically synonymous. In terms of discharge status code guidance, the recommendation is to use 01 when the patient is receiving care/services at home and use 04 when the patient’s residence is a facility.
