What is the difference between Rec 709 and Log C (no matrix)?
ALEXA can output HD images in the Rec 709 format for a traditional television video workflow (simpler post production but fewer color correction options) or in the Log C (no matrix) format for a DI post production workflow (more complex post production but more color correction options). The output format destined for a traditional television workflow is called Rec 709, which is short for the International Telecommunication Union’s “ITU-R Recommendation BT.709”. In order to create Rec 709 images, the raw image data from the sensor is debayered, given a gradation in accordance with the Rec 709 specifications and transformed through a color matrix from the native color space of the ALEXA sensor into the Rec 709 color space. Within the confines of the Rec 709 color space, the images have a special ARRI default look that preserves detail in highlights and shadows while delivering natural skin tones.
