The gemstones are generally divided into two classes- precious stones and semi-precious stones. Rarity is an important factor in determining the cost of a gemstone and the value of a gemstone should not increase or diminish just because it is categorized as precious or semi-precious. Rarest gems are classified as precious stones such as diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and rubies. All other gemstones are classified as semi-precious.
