What is the difference between powder coat paint and oil based enamel paint?
Powder coatings (PC’s). The primary benefits of powder coatings consist of very hard and durable surface characteristics. PC’s are available in some interesting textures and ‘vein effect’ colors. Powder coating is the preferred method from a production stand point for reasons of expediency and cost effectiveness. PC’s do not contain any rust inhibiting compounds. PC’s contain an aluminum oxide component that can react with alkaline (found in some Arizona soils) to create oxidation. limited color palette. Not conducive to touch up, damage repair or color change. Oil Based Industrial Enamels (IE’s). EPA regulations coupled with production limitations are slowly phasing IE’s out of production manufacturing. Current research efforts are under way to introduce a water based DTM (Direct to metal) paint to replace oil based coatings. However the benefits derived from the application of an IE have yet to be equaled. IE’s contain rust inhibitive agents. After the appropriate curing time has ela
