What is the Difference Between Point Source and Non-Point Source Pollution?
There are two types of source pollution; Point source and non-point source. Simply put, point source (PS) is a single location, easily traced, whereas non-point source (NPS) is harder to find, and harder to prove from where it emanates. A point source pollution situation could be a catch basin in one’s driveway where paint brushes or car oil has been deliberately poured into, causing the pollutant to flow throughout the system, eventually discharging either into a creek or a beach environment. A non-point source pollutant could be several cars dripping oil onto the street, which slowly washes into the catch basins on the side of the road. These types of sources may take weeks to reach the drains, but are as equally harmful as an intentionally dumped waste. What is the City’s Next Step in Addressing Source Pollution?
