What is the difference between plasma and lcd televisions?

0

A lot of people are confused by the two major types of televisions that exist today: plasma and LCD.  On the surface there doesn’t seem to be a lot of difference between these two types of television sets.  These differences can be viewed as pros and cons of both types of television sets.

How Color Is Produced

The main difference between these two types of television sets is how the pixels are lit. With LCD screens each pixel has 3 colors.  These are red, green and blue.  Whenever the liquid crystals are energized they block certain colored pixels from showing.  This is how the desired color is produced.  The backlight that is used in this process is always on.

With plasma screens plasma gas excites the visible light photons that produce color on your television screen by light pixels into a variety of colors.  Since there is no backlight used here much truer colors are produced.  This is why those who want the truest color should choose a plasma screen.  However, if you live at a high altitude, this gas could cause you to have a distorted view.

The Refresh Rate

LCD television displays have a much slower refresh rate than plasma televisions.  This is because LCD was never meant for use in displaying video. For this reason, you will sometimes see ghosts (images that haven’t completely cleared themselves from your vision).  However, over the years, LCD’s refresh rates have become very comparable to plasma.

Weight

Some people prefer LCD television sets because they weigh less and they also use less energy than plasma television screens.  Both of them weigh less than a conventional television set.  This does make it easier to mount a LCD television on the wall.

A Final Word On These Differences

The aforementioned differences are mainly a matter of academic debate.  A lot of people find that these differences pale in comparison whenever traditional and newer televisions are compared.  Nevertheless, you should know about these differences so that you can purchase the best television whenever it comes down to price and your needs.
