What is the difference between patriarchical and patrilineal?

0

“Patriarchal” is the overall system of running things where the male is head of the family, and descent is traced down male line. “Patrilineal” is specifically the lineage part: tracing descent down the male line. So you could theoretically have a matriarchal society (women in charge) that nevertheless was patrilineal in tracing descent.

It’s “patriarchal”, not “patriarchical”. “Patriarchal” refers to anything relating to the patriarch himself, while patrilineal is for anything relating to the lineage. Patriarch- the male head of the family/tribe. Lineage- the descent through the male line.
