What is the difference between open cell foam & closed cell foam?
Open cell foam is a soft, 0.5 LB foam that expands 100x’s its volume when applied. It is a soft foam (much like the foam found in bed pillows) and has an R-value of R4 per IN and is used about 90% of the time for new construction. Open cell foam is a 99% air barrier and therefore stops 99% of air borne water (i.e., water vapor). Closed cell foam is a very dense 2.0 LB foam that cures to a very hard material. It is both an air barrier and a moisture barrier with an R-Value of R7 per IN of thickness.
