What is the difference between Mylar® and PVC?

0

PVC was the material used in the original M-7 capsule that was designed by Georg Neumann in 1928. In 1958 Neumann GmbH switched from the use of PVC to Mylar as their diaphragm material of choice. Mylar™ is a less expensive material for the production of microphone capsules, and much easier to manipulate in the construction of the final capsule. It is a proven material that has been in use for over 50 years. Some say that capsules made from PVC material have a better “depth” to the tone, an opulence that is unattainable from any other diaphragm material. This is why we have capsules that employ PVC diaphragms available. It should be noted that many on the internet forums have commented that PVC will over time harden and crack. This is true, but it takes a good 30-40 years for this to happen (under normal conditions with normal use) and there is now a replacement source for the part so fear not!!
