What is the difference between Microsoft Outlook add-ins, add-ons, plug-ins and Outlook extensions?
Generally, Office add-ins, add-ons and plug-ins mean the same – they are COM-addins for Microsoft Office, which have been a part of Microsoft Office since Office 2000/XP. There are COM-add-ins for Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Outlook and for the most of other Microsoft Office applications. Outlook extensions are old-style applications which compatible with all versions of Microsoft Outlook. They originated from Microsoft Exchange Client, that is considered to be a predecessor of Microsoft Outlook to a large extent. Outlook COM-addins and Outlook extensions are run by means of various windows that are opened through “Advanced options” by COM Add-ins and “Add-in Manager” buttons correspondingly.
