What is the difference between marsupials and placental mammals?

I think that most marsupials are placental. The baby begins growing in the placenta but is born before beinging fully mature. The babies crawl from the mother’s vagina and into her pouch using only instinct. They then finish developing in the pouch. The only marcupial who lays eggs that I know of is the duck billed platypus. I am not even sure that they are considered marsupials.
