What is the difference between Makrooh and Haram?
Makrooh is translated as discouraged, while HARAM is forbidden. A thing is discouraged when there is no specific ruling which makes it forbidden, but it is not proper for a Muslim to do. If someone does not offer his prayers until it is almost time for the next prayer, and does that regularly, his practice is discouraged or MAKROOH. He is not showing due respect and attention to his prayers. You will find that such a person tends to think of prayer as a burden. On the other hand, a thing is forbidden, or HARAM, when we have a clear ruling it unlawful for a Muslim to do. Thus, drinking or gambling are forbidden because the Qur’an states that there are two practices of the devil’s own making. Failing deliberately to do something ordered by the Qur’an or the Sunnah is forbidden. Thus, to fail to pray deliberately is to commit something that is forbidden.
